Dr. Shabbir Alibhai

Biosketch:

Dr. Shabbir Alibhai is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Health Policy, Management, and Evaluation at the University of Toronto.  He is a staff physician in the Division of General Internal Medicine and Geriatrics at the University Health Network, an affiliate scientist at the Toronto General Research Institute and the Toronto Rehabilitation Institute, and a Research Scientist of the National Cancer Institute of Canada.  His research interests are in geriatric oncology, focusing on genitourinary malignancies (prostate cancer) and acute myeloid leukaemia (AML).  Current projects include:
 

  1. Impact of androgen deprivation therapy on quality of life, physical function, cognitive function, and bone mineral density in men with non-metastatic prostate cancer
  2. Quality of life in older patients with AML
  3. A randomized trial of two versions of a decision aid for early stage prostate cancer
  4. Short-term complications after treatment for early-stage prostate cancer
  5. Impact of age and comorbidity on treatment-related mortality with induction therapy for AML
  6. Quality of life and costs associated with conventional vs. reduced intensity bone marrow transplanation for myeloid malignancies
  7. A clinical trial of ATG and cyclosporine for older adults with aplastic anaemia or myelodysplastic syndrome
  8. A randomized trial of daily whole-body vibration on bone mineral density in non-osteoporotic post-menopausal women
  9. Information needs of middle-aged and older patients with newly diagnosed AML
